One of the most expensive homes on the market in Alexandria was just listed, and it has quite the history.

The 14,000 square-foot listing at 510 Wolfe Street hit the market for $10.8 million with Corcoran McEnearney earlier this week.

The property was originally built in 1854 by Francis L. Smith, and used by the Union Army as a military hospital during the Civil War. While listing agents Babs Beckwith and Lauren Bishop don't know exactly when it became a private home, the listing has not been on the market since the 1980s when it sold for under $1 million.

Known as the Vowell-Smith House, the seven-bedroom residence has a number of interesting features, including a three-story open staircase, 13 separate fireplaces throughout including one in the kitchen, 8-inch original period doors, and a handful of 19th-century converted glass fixtures.

Outside, there is a widow’s walk with 360-degree views of Alexandria and the Potomac River, as well as a covered veranda with a wisteria trellis and a sunken garden with the home's original stone walls and steps.
