This weekend, the Arlington County Board approved the huge redevelopment of the Macy's along Glebe Road.
Insight Property Group will replace the Macy's/office building at 685 N. Glebe Road (map) with a 16-story, two-phase development, delivering 553 apartments above a grocery store. The project will include 241 residential and 148 retail parking spaces on two below-grade levels, along with 222 residential bicycle spaces. SK+I Architecture is the designer.

The Board approved 236 of the residential units at the development through a transfer of development rights from The Haven Apartments site at 5100 7th Road S., also owned by Insight Property Group. This is the first application of an incentive that permits a property owner to transfer double the number of affordable units they preserve along Columbia Pike to another site. The 118 units at The Haven will become committed affordable units.
“This project will bring needed new housing and an exciting retail presence to the commercial heart of Ballston, just blocks from the Ballston Metro Station. It demonstrates the adaptability and resilience of our commercial market by re-envisioning an office product as residential,” said County Board Chair, Katie Cristol.
