Earlier this year, UrbanTurf reported on how DC-area renters were living in 95 fewer square feet of space for the same rate they paid in 2014. Now, a new study shows how far $1,500 in rent goes for renters around the globe.
PropertyClub released a report earlier this week identifying what $1,500 rents in the top 50 cities in A.T. Kearney’s 2019 Global Cities Index. For DC proper, $1,500 rents 38 fewer square feet now (386 square feet) than in 2014 (419 square feet).

As the least affordable city for renters worldwide, $1,500 rents a 261 square foot apartment in San Francisco, while it would have rented 319 square feet in 2014. The U.S. accounts for six out of the ten most expensive cities to rent a one-bedroom apartment worldwide; at a rate of $3.88 per square foot, DC is fourth on the list.
The study uses rent per square foot to assume an average for 1,500 square feet.
