This Week's Find: Custom-Built Contemporary in Palisades
4865 Potomac Avenue NW
For This Week’s Find, we take a closer look at an architect-built home that went up earlier this year on DC’s other Potomac Avenue.
Last fall, Acanthus Architects bought a plot of land in Palisades alongside the Potomac River, knocked down a decrepit house on the lot, and started work on a 7,155-square-foot, seven-bedroom contemporary home.
The residence is square-shaped and the hallways are designed as an x-y axis with rooms in the quadrants, essentially. “You stand at the center of the hallway and you have a perfect axis in both directions,” Vivian Fernandes, co-owner of Acanthus, told UrbanTurf. The rooms on the first floor are open to each other, said Fernandes, and pocket doors are available to create privacy if necessary.
Part of the appeal of the lot was the view of the Potomac River. The greenery blocks the view in the summer and spring, but when the leaves fall, the home has a few different vantage points. A two-story deck faces the river, and the third story has oversized windows looking out onto it.
The home has both a wheelchair-accessible elevator that connects the four stories, and a Smart Touch system that controls the lighting, sound system and Wi-Fi throughout the house. More photos and details below.
