This Week’s Find: A DC Farmhouse Founded With Wine
This Week’s Find is a little bit of a diamond in the rough by DC standards.
The home sits tucked away behind Sidwell Friends school in Cleveland Park on a property once owned by John Adlum - who is rumored to be the first commercial producer of wine in the United States. Now considered part of the Springland Farm community, the farmhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its age and authentic preservation. One of Adlum's vineyards, which spanned 60 acres, once sat on the estate.
"The wine produced at Springland Farm was enjoyed by the Founding Fathers of America," the listing said.
While Adlum never lived on the property, according to documentation from the current owners, one of his daughters and her husband built the home which stands today.

The six-bedroom house sits on over an acre of land. Beyond a 3,600 square-foot circular driveway and spacious front patio, the new owners will be greeted by a foyer and a staircase leading to bedrooms on the upper level.
The main floor features an open concept kitchen, a dining room and a living room with a fireplace. The kitchen has a large middle island with seating, and overhanging storage for pots, pans and cooking accessories.
Throughout the house, a multitude of large windows ensure that natural light resonates in the space. Standout finishes include white wood accents and primarily warm-hued wall colors. The backside of the listing features two other covered patios - one leading into the large grassy backyard and the other on the main floor. A separate building next to the house is currently used as a one-car garage with extra storage space.
