Hidden Places: DC's Three-House Street

In Hidden Places, UrbanTurf takes a look at some of the charming but lesser-known one- and two-block streets in the District. This week, we’re focused on Miller’s Court, which is a stone’s throw from its Supreme cousin.

Miller’s Court is located off of East Capitol between 3rd and 4th Streets NE (map). It consists of just three small, attached rowhouses: 308, 310 and 312 Miller’s Court NE.

The homes are about two blocks away from the Capitol and the Supreme Court, and just around the corner from Grubb’s Pharmacy, which opened in 1867 and is one of the longest-running pharmacies in the country.

The best part of this hidden place? You can live in it — for a price. All three of the houses on Miller’s Court, which range in size from about 550 to 600 square feet, are rented by Capitol Hill Stay, which offers furnished short-term apartments.

But they don’t come cheap. Rents for each start at $4,650 a month. (And you wonder why developer SB-Urban thinks short-term furnished rentals are a good investment.)

The houses on Miller’s Court wouldn’t look out of place on a regular rowhouse block in the neighborhood; there’s a small, tidy bit of landscaping near the front door and room for the trash and recycling, while out back the home’s occupants have a bit more room to be outdoors.

The homes’ owner, Brian Stansberry, who also owns Capitol Hill Stay, writes on his site that he believes the properties were built around 1880 and originally used as carriage houses.

“It’s an unusually quiet spot in a vibrant neighborhood,” Stansberry writes.
