Apple Store Planned for Carnegie Library Goes Back to National Capital Planning Commission
A rendering of the renovated Carnegie Library
In June, the National Capital Planning Commission granted conceptual approval for Apple and Events DC to restore and transform the building formerly known as the Central Public Library into retail space for Apple and office and exhibit spaces for the Historical Society of Washington. In September, the team will go back before the Commission for a few remaining issues.
The changes that the Commission will consider relate to signage at the building as well as landscape improvements that include a site-wide tree survey and protection plan, new park benches, and new bike storage near the building.

Designed by Ackerman and Ross in a neoclassical style, the library was constructed in 1903 at 801 K Street NW (map) and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. In June, the Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) granted approval to Apple and Events DC to restore the exterior and retrofit the interior of the building for the new purpose.
