A Look At The Renters Moving In And Out Of DC

A new report examines where DC renters are looking to move as well as where incoming renters are likely coming from.
Approximately 34% of renters in the DC region are looking for rentals in other metro areas, per the latest Renter Migration Report from Apartment List. In contrast, 43% of renters looking for apartments in DC are looking from outside the area.

Baltimore, Virginia Beach and Richmond remain the most enticing search destinations for DC-area renters, accounting for 28% of searches. Baltimore-area renters also account for about 27% of searches for apartments in the DC area, followed by New York City (8.3%) and Atlanta (3%). For renters who live in the New York City area, the DC region is the primary destination for a new apartment.
The analysis in this report is based on apartment searches rather than completed moves, based on the search preferences that users provide when they register for Apartment List.
