710 Square Feet: How Far $400,000 Goes In The DC Housing Market

A new study finds how far a smaller budget goes in DC's housing market. 

According to new data from RealtyHop, $400,000 can afford a buyer only 700 square feet worth of lodging in DC. That works out to a citywide per square foot price of $571.

Among the largest cities, Boston (581 square feet), San Jose (497 square feet), Manhattan (421 square feet), San Francisco (417 square feet) and does that budget buy even less. Meanwhile, $400,000 can buy as much as 5,200 square feet in Detroit.

To create this report, RealtyHop analyzed home price data taken from over 5 million for-sale listings over the last 12 months. Listings included residential single-family homes, condos, co-ops, and townhouses actively on the market.
