Why Pandemic Buyers Might Be 2025's Biggest Group Of Home Sellers

A new report out this week takes a look at who will be selling their home next year, and one of the largest groups appears to be those who purchased a home during the pandemic.
A survey conducted in November by Bright MLS found that many homeowners that plan to sell in 2025 have not been living in their homes very long.
"According to a survey of 1,581 homeowners across the U.S., 23.4% have lived in their home less than five years," the report stated. "By contrast, nearly a third of homeowners who said they are planning to sell in the next year have lived in their homes less than five years."
Over 50% of prospective home sellers look to be in their 30s and 40s, a group that took advantage of historically low interest rates to purchase during the pandemic.
"Many of these buyers have been able to quickly accumulate significant equity in their homes as home prices have escalated,” said Lisa Sturtevant, Bright MLS Chief Economist. “This wealth gain has created financial security for this group of homeowners, and is also allowing them to be move-up buyers even in today’s relatively high interest rate environment.”
