PUD Filed For 80-Unit Affordable Housing Development at Northern Tip of DC
A large new affordable housing project for the very edge of DC is moving forward.
The NHP Foundation has submitted a planned unit development (PUD) to DC's Zoning Commission for a new four-story, 80-unit all-affordable housing development at 7050 Eastern Avenue NW (map). The project, designed by Soto Architecture, would require demolishing the existing 36-unit apartment building at the address. Plans were submitted to DC's Historic Preservation Office for a slightly larger iteration of the development last fall.
The design of the new building will consist of a front elevation broken down with two projecting bays of different depths that rise four stories in height, and then the building will extend to a sharp angle formed by the rear edge of the site, which is angled due to the Metro line.

The project will have a community room and rooftop deck on the penthouse level, and many of the apartments will have outdoor balconies. Eight of the units in the development will be devoted to permanent supportive housing for those formerly without homes.
"The supportive services are designed to build independent living and tenancy skills and connect people with community-based health care, treatment, and employment services," the PUD stated. "An on-site service provider will assist these residents to help ensure their success in the new residential community."
