While any loosening of the height limit is years away, DC does have another way to increase the number of residences in the city: renovating and filling the many vacant houses that dot the District.
According to DC’s Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA), there are 2,637 vacant buildings in the city right now. This document also breaks down the vacancies by ward; Ward 7 has the most, at 573, followed by Ward 5 with 505. Ward 3 has the least, with just 53 vacant properties.
One DCist contributor decided to create a map of all the vacant properties in Ward 1. As the post notes, vacant homes aren’t just an opportunity — they can also be dangerous fire hazards. The map and more details about it can be viewed on DCist.
