DC’s movie theater mini-boom continues.
An eight-screen Angelika movie theater will open at Union Market in 2015, The Washington Post reported early Tuesday. Developer Edens told the Post that the theater will anchor a residential development planned for a site near the market. The Angelika Film Center is known for showing independent movies and offering movie-watching cuisine that goes beyond popcorn and soda.
The news is the latest in a series of new movie theater announcements for the District. Last week, news came that Landmark Theaters will open a 10-screen movie theater at JBG’s Capitol Point project in NoMa. That theater is expected to open in the fall of 2016.
And in September, a 16-screen theater planned near a new mixed-used development in Navy Yard was unanimously supported by the local ANC.
UrbanTurf recently communicated with JBG regarding the independent movie theater planned for its Atlantic Plumbing project near 8th and V Street NW. The firm said that there are no updates regarding planned retail tenants for the development at this time.
