A new residential project is on the boards for downtown DC that would transform an undeveloped alley and older office space in the West End neighborhood.
UrbanTurf has learned that ONE Street Commercial Properties is redeveloping the former office buildings at 2121 Ward Place, 2112 and 2115 Ward Court NW (map) into a 48-unit apartment project with two cafe/retail concepts.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the new development, designed by Rich Markus Architects, is that it would take an inactive alleyway and convert it into a pedestrian-friendly space with a number of retail options. The office buildings are also located where Duke Ellington was born, and the developer tells UrbanTurf that an ode to the jazz musician will be worked into the project.
The buildings along Ward Place are currently vacant, except for a USPS processing center. The development team presented plans to the community this week, and UrbanTurf will continue to monitor plans as the project moves forward.
