House Approval Sets Stage For January Groundbreaking in Southwest Waterfront
Rendering of The Wharf
Late Tuesday afternoon, The House of Representatives voted to approve a measure that will help the redevelopment of the Southwest Waterfront move forward in January, Roll Call is reporting.
The new bill lifts restrictions on what developers can do to the city-owned land, and as Roll Call reports, yesterday’s vote was somewhat of a formality:
Though the House passed the bill by voice vote late last year, it needed to vote a second time to concur with a Senate amendment to the measure that would clarify that the Army Corps of Engineers, which is responsible for upkeep of certain portions of the Southwest waterfront, would be relieved of that duty should private firms develop those areas.
Despite the vote of approval, there are still some issues that need to be resolved before the $2 billion redevelopment project, which will include office, retail, hotel and residential components, moves forward. Earlier this month, ANC 6D decided not to support the PUD for the development project known as The Wharf, until issues, including the fate of the live-aboards of the Gangplank Marina, are resolved. The ANC passed a resolution stating its desire to wait until this and other issues are resolved before throwing its support behind the project. They will meet again on July 9th.
