Local developer EYA has started construction on a 210-townhouse development in the Capital Riverfront which, once complete, could be the largest green residential project in the country. The developer has taken steps to make sure that all of the townhomes in the Southeast neighborhood meet the “LEED for Homes” certification, the industry standard for recognizing green building practices.
According to the Washington Business Journal, of the 731 LEED-certified projects in the U.S., the two largest are currently in the Bronx, NY and in Pasco, Wash. The EYA project would not only become the largest, but it would be the first housing development in the DC Metro area to be certified under the LEED for Homes rating system.
“The homes at Capitol Quarter (will) provide more energy savings, better indoor air quality, and less impact on the environment than standard new townhomes – all qualities that the LEED for Homes program is designed to promote,” the EYA press release noted.
The first phase of townhouses are set for delivery by April or May of this year, and all construction is expected to be complete by the fall of 2010. Prices start at $630,000.
