The $17 Million Castle on the Potomac Is Heading to Auction

The McLean estate known as the "Castle on the Potomac" — a 16,000 square-foot home perched above the Potomac River — is taking a new approach to finding a buyer after spending nearly three years on the market.
The property, first listed in late 2023 for $22 million before being pulled and re-listed in September 2024 at $16 million, will now go to auction. Concierge Auctions will begin the bidding for the property on May 15th.
The eight-bedroom home along Rivercrest Drive includes features like wood floors sourced from around the world, an in-home theater, multiple game and recreation areas, and an underground escape room that the listing describes as a "safe haven." Perhaps most unusually for the region, the home's swimming pool, hot tub, and sauna are all located indoors.
The auction comes with the property currently listed at $17.198 million, but prospective buyers may find the entry point considerably more accessible than that figure suggests. Starting bids are anticipated to range between $5 million and $9.9 million.
