Evermay
An update on Evermay, one of DC’s largest and most expensive homes, has become almost a weekly ritual on UrbanTurf over the last couple months. We reported when the 3.5-acre estate at 1623 28th Street NW found a buyer in May and when it closed for $22 million about ten days ago.
Now, informed rumors have surfaced about the identity of the buyers. Washington Social Diary’s Carol Joynt is reporting that the mammoth estate was purchased by a couple that made a fortune in the pharmaceuticals business:
“The buyers are gifted biochemists with a pharmaceuticals fortune, Dr. Sachiko Kuno and Dr. Ryuji Ueno, husband and wife, and founders of Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, R-Tech Ueno, Ltd., and S&R Technology Holdings. Their individual bios are packed with impressive accomplishments in pharmaceutical research and development.”
The Sucampo Pharmaceuticals website says that it “focuses on the development and commercialization of medicines based on prostones, which are bio-lipids that occur naturally in the human body” and that one of the company’s main products is a medicine aimed at treating (we kid you not) irritable bowel syndrome.
Incidentally, Evermay has 8.5 bathrooms.
Update: An UrbanTurf reader wrote in noting that news of the buyer’s identities actually broke in The Wall Street Journal’s Private Properties section on Friday.
