New Census data out this week shows that DC picked up about 2,350 residents between July 2024 and July 2025. However, the gains come with some disappointing revisions for the city.
In addition to the new population estimate, the Census Bureau revised its 2024 numbers for DC downward -- from 702,250 to 691,310, shaving roughly 11,000 residents from last year's count. The modest gain in 2025 brings the city's estimated population to 693,645, fueled by natural increase—more births than deaths—and international migration.
While the District's population trajectory has been somewhat flatter than previously reported, the city is still adding residents after the dramatic pandemic-era exodus. The population increases of the last few years have helped offset the COVID-related population declines in 2021, when the city lost approximately 20,000 residents.
