The only fans of a new residential building planned in DC may be people who like to communicate via animation.
UrbanTurf has learned that there is a new 25-unit residential project planned along the U Street Corridor that will have an interesting facade: a large emoji.
“We design and build residential projects with the new generation of homebuyer in mind,” architect Ira Donacare told UrbanTurf. “We took a chance that this generation really likes communicating with this yellow guy.”

When complete, the emoji will be able to change emotions based on the feeling of the day. Donacare said that the facade is able to change from a winking face to a smiling face to an expressionless face to the face with rolling eyes.

UrbanTurf reached a local ANC representative who had yet to be briefed on the plans. She didn’t give the project a very bright future.
“People are constantly upset that we shoot down new and innovative design options, but I don’t think this one will pass muster with the community.”
Donacare is more optimistic.
"We live in a city that needs more architectural excitement," he told UrbanTurf. "Nothing should be out of bounds."
UrbanTurf would be surprised if plans for this project move on beyond today, but we will keep you updated.
