The DC Council approved a bill on Tuesday to move forward with the development of a Whole Foods, and 393 market rate and affordable residential units at 965 Florida Avenue NW (map). The project is a joint venture from MRP Residential, The JBG Companies, Fundrise and Ellis Development.
The initial plans when the team was awarded the site in 2013 by the city included a 370,000 square-foot mixed-use building with a residential component and a market made up of stores and small grocers on the ground-level. In April, the Washington Business Journal reported that Whole Foods would anchor the new project.
The bill passed today included the official disposition of the DC-owned parcel.

“This is great news for the community,” Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau said in a statement. “All told, it will bring 106 units of affordable housing as well as a Whole Foods full-service grocery store to an area that needs more affordable housing options.”
The development is one of the first projects in DC to follow the city’s new affordable housing rules whereby 30 percent of residential units at new developments must be affordable.
