On Saturday, the Arlington County Board approved a plan to replace Marymount University’s eight-story “Blue Goose” facility at 1000 North Glebe Road (map) with a nine-story office building and a 15-story, 267-unit residential building. The mixed-use development, from the Shooshan Company in partnership with Marymount, will result in the demolition of the “Blue Goose” building constructed in 1963.
The office building will front Fairfax Drive while the residential building will sit at the corner of North Glebe Road. A public plaza stretching just over 7,500 square feet will anchor the corner of the site at Fairfax and N. Glebe Road. A public walkway will run east-west through the site and interior courtyard. Gensler will be designing the office portion and SK&I Design designed the residential building.
A surface parking lot with 202 spaces will be replaced with three levels of underground parking — 317 spaces for the office building and 265 spaces for the residential building.
The plan to demolish the Blue Goose building drew criticism from Preservation Arlington, a county preservation group. As a result, the developer will incorporate some of the building’s distinctive blue panels into the design of the new project.
No updated timeline was given on Saturday for when construction would start on the project.
