Angelika Theater, Offices Planned For Atop Union Market
A planned unit development application submitted to the DC Zoning Commission on Thursday outlines a movie theater and offices that could be built on top of Union Market, courtesy of developer Edens. The Washington Business Journal was the first to report this news on Friday morning.
The initial phase of the plan outlined in Zoning Case 14-12 calls for a movie theater, likely the planned Angelika Film Center, to be built on top of the market, and another four stories of office space to be built on top of that. See rendering of planned development above. A second proposed phase could include a mixed-use building with office, retail and possibly residential, but that would be several years down the road.
The architects working with Edens on the project are Shalom Baranes Associates, and Mahan Rykiel Associates.
This is yet the latest development plan for the Union Market area from Edens. In May, the developer submitted plans for a massive mixed-use development at 1270 4th St. NE. The 11-story, 110-foot development will have about 40,000 square feet of retail and 420 to 520 residential units across 370,000 square feet. The units will range in size from studios to three-bedrooms.
Once the theater and office project receives approval from the Zoning Commission and gets permits, the estimated timeline for delivery is two years.
