A Large Solar Farm is Pitched in Montgomery County
A concept application was filed last month for a large new community solar farm in Montgomery County.
The Black Rock Road Solar Project, led by Distributed Solar Development, wants to create a solar farm at 16952 Black Rock Road (map). The array would be on concrete ballasts and would produce roughly 1,950 kW AC for the power grid; Pepco has already granted approval.

The surrounding site is mostly agricultural, forested, and residential, and no trees will be felled as part of the proposal. The application acknowledges that some portions of the subject site are designated as "significant for biodiversity conservation" to one extent or another by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), but states that DNR informed the team that it has no official records of plant or animal species on the site. The federal Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service identified a species of bat at the site.
The Montgomery County Planning Department's Development Review Committee will consider the project next Tuesday.
