The nearly two million square-foot development slated for the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro station is moving forward.

Fivesquares Development has filed preliminary and site plan applications for the first phase of the project, which would build 226 apartments and 9,000 square feet of commercial space on the WMATA-owned parking lot fronting Tuckerman Lane near Strathmore Park Court (map)

Phase One will include two buildings connected by a below-grade garage with 252 vehicular spaces and 96 long-term bicycle spaces. The unit mix will span from studios to three-bedrooms with dens. There will also be townhouse-style units with private ground-floor entrances and 33 moderately-priced dwelling units. Torti Gallas & Partners is the design architect.

The first phase will include delivery of the 1.2-acre "Central Park" and the partially-shared "Spine Road" that will bisect the site, along with some interim uses that will include a dog park. The applications also seek to amend prior approvals in order to deliver the shared garage and to tweak the design of two private roads.

The multi-phase project will eventually deliver over 2,200 residential units and up to 317,537 square feet of non-residential space. Montgomery County's Development Review Committee will consider the applications in two weeks.
