18-Unit Residential Development Planned For Site of Former Cobalt Bar in Dupont Circle

An 18-unit residential project will be constructed on the site of the recently-shuttered gay bar Cobalt in Dupont Circle. Plans for the new development at 1637-1641 R Street NW (map) were recently filed with the Board of Zoning Adjustment.

Raycon, Inc. will make interior renovations to the second through fourth floors of the existing buildings for upwards of 18 residential units, and a 1,200 square-foot penthouse will be constructed on the roof. The first floor will continue to be used for restaurant use.
Cobalt closed its doors in early March. Bar owner Eric Little cited the sale of the building, the rise of dating apps, and “a slow decline in sales” as reasons for the closure.
