12-Story Micro-Unit Development Pitched For 15th Street Church

Micro-units are re-entering the development conversation in DC after a few-year hiatus. 

Metropolitan A.M.E. Church has filed plans with DC's Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) to construct a 12-story micro-unit building adjacent to the church at 1518 M Street NW (map). 

The addition, designed by Bryant Mitchell, would have 27 micro-units that would house the homeless and at-risk veterans; the new building would also have on-site support services for this population. 

A micro-unit is a compact, efficiently designed apartment—typically 250 to 350 square feet—that prioritizes smart layouts, built-in storage, and multifunctional furniture. From about 2012 to 2016, a number of micro-unit developments were pitched around the city, but only a handful came to fruition.
