Rita’s, one of Woodridge’s few retailers, will soon have company.

Last time we reported on Rhode Island Avenue NE’s retail scene, a restaurant, a bike shop and an outpost of Taylor Gourmet were planning to open up and start filling out the scant commercial strip between 16th Street NE and 24th Street NE.

Now, three new retailers will be starting business there in the near future, UrbanTurf has learned. It looks like the work of Friends of Rhode Island Avenue (FoRIA), a group that spent the last year campaigning local businesses to consider opening in the area, continues to pay off.

First, Zeke’s Coffee, a Baltimore-based roastery and coffeeshop, is planning on taking over the space at 2300 Rhode Island Avenue NE early in the summer. The store will use the location to roast coffee beans for distribution throughout DC, but nearby residents will also be able to pull up a chair to enjoy a freshly-brewed cup. Zeke’s plans on having both indoor and outdoor seating, FoRIA Executive Director Kyle Todd told UrbanTurf.

Next, CapoeiraDC, a studio where interested folks can practice the fast-paced Afro-Brazilian activity that resembles both martial arts and dance, is opening up at 2008 Rhode Island Avenue NE this summer. Residents have talked to us about wanting a yoga studio or something similar to open nearby; perhaps this option will satisfy.

Finally, local pizza chain Manny and Olga’s is opening a shop at 2117 Rhode Island Avenue NE. Unlike some of their downtown outposts, this shop will have old-fashioned pizzeria-type seating indoors and a sidewalk seating section outdoors, Todd told us.
