For this installment of What X Buys, UrbanTurf looks at some homes in the DC area affordable to buyers looking to spend $525,000.
A Bedroom in a Former Schoolhouse
The condos at the former Buchanan School on Capitol Hill have debuted, and a one-bedroom unit there falls just under budget for this week's feature. As with other homes in the building, this 660 square-foot condo takes advantage of the original architectural features of the schoolhouse. This unit in particular boasts 12 foot ceilings and a grand array of windows that create a semicircular arch, surrounded by a red brick frame with ornate mantels on either side. Both the bathroom and the one-wall kitchen have minimalist custom cabinetry, and the latter has integrated appliances and large vein quartz countertops and backsplash. Community amenities at the Buchanan School include a library and a lounge that opens onto a courtyard with a grilling station.

A Corner Condo Up Connecticut Avenue
For a larger condo option, head up to the Forest Hills neighborhood where this two-bedroom corner unit has a foyer large enough for an office nook. On the opposite side of the entry lies the main living room, which can accommodate a dining area and a lounging space. A picture-frame doorway leads to a bonus seating area beneath a triplet of windows. A breakfast nook off the living room transitions to the galley kitchen, which is bookended by squat built-in china cabinets. Both of the bedrooms in the 1,200-plus square-foot unit can also fit in separate seating areas.

Two Stories, But Ample Bonus Space
For a four-bedroom option close to budget, this Alexandria Cape Cod home within a mile of Huntington Metro fits the bill. Straight ahead upon entry, a dining nook is created around an L-shaped built-in bench. To the left is the living room, separated from the kitchen by a doorway with cut-outs on either side that double as decorative shelves. A deep den on the main level doubles as a media room. The master suite occupies the upper floor under a cove ceiling and contains a dormer window with a built-in bench beneath. The huge fenced-in rear yard includes a pergola covering a paved patio area and a detached garage with a partially-finished rec room area.
