A day after TBD reported that Pepco customers are receiving unusually high bills, an UrbanTurf reader asks if the increased charges could be the result of new meters.

At the end of December, a Pepco employee rang the buzzer of my condo and told me that he was changing the meters for my building. When I got my new bill it was twice as high as the previous month. Now I can understand a slightly higher bill in January than in December, but double the amount, was a little shocking. I called Pepco and the customer service representative said it was the result of increased electricity usage. But when I compared the two bills, my usage was only slightly higher in January than in December. I will tolerate Pepco charging me more for electricity usage, but if this is a mistake, I want to get it resolved. Has anyone else run into this issue and received a suitable answer/response from Pepco?

    $768 in December, $857 in January. 2000 sqft townhome. I don't get it. My highest bill prior to this was $450.

    I had a January bill that was much higher than it had been in the past as well, but dimissed it as just the result of higher usage and a cold month. I don't know if/when the new meters were installed in my building, but did receive the notice that they would be doing so. Would like to hear more.

    I understand that Pepco gives a few weeks notice before the install takes place, but does anyone know if there is a schedule somewhere that shows when the different areas of the city are getting installations? We have a meter on the interior of our home so the smart meters are going to be much less of a hassle for us.

    when i first moved into my condo, my first month's pepco bill for 940 sq feet was 375. Knowing it was a mistake, i protested it and after three months of monitoring my usage (really? shouldn't they know??), they refunded (ok, applied to my account) the money. question it.

    Not sure if this applies to the new smart-meters, but occasionally they used to do estimated billing certain months - so they wouldn't read the meter every month and if the WAG estimate was off you would be billed for the actual charges the following month

    Guys, increases in you electricity consumption in the winter periods is most oftenly due to heating equipment. If your homes consist of heatpumps you should understand that the colder it get the more electricity you will use. When the temperature goes below around 35 degrees then your heat pump will normally activate electrical resistance heating, which is VERY EXPENSIVE. I do infield investigations for utilities and too often I find heat pumps with stuck electrical resistance contacts or heat pumps with compressors not working and owners dont even realize. The thing with a heat pump is if it is not working properly you wont sense any change in its operation, you will just get a major electric bill. HVAC contractors only check that the unit is functional, if there is a fauly contact a HVAC professional will not know, they are only concerned with the functionality of the unit. If you guys need anymore information i'll be glad to answer.

    Just got off the phone with Pepco. I went online to pay my pill and saw that it was twice the normal amount, and it says I've used twice the amount of electricity I ever have before once the meeter was changed out. So I called and they said that yes it's much higher than normal so I am supposed to get a call back from someone about the installation of the meter to make sure it was done correctly or something... I don't know but they better not try to make me pay this crazy bill!

    These new meters are called smart meters. well i don't see anything smart about them. maybe for them is smart. my bills have doubled since i got he new meter. I'm very upset about these changes. I called them and i got nothing resolved. i wish i could do something about it. thank you.
