Apartments in major metros across the country continue to shrink, but is that happening in the DC region?

A recent study from RENTCafé found a dynamic in the nationwide rental market akin to what most grocery shoppers have observed: people are paying more, but are getting less.

The average size of a new apartment in the U.S. was 908 square feet this year, a small increase from last year (904 square feet), according to the report.

Out of 100 cities nationwide with the largest rental markets, DC has the eighth-smallest apartments, with an average size of 745 square feet. Studios, one-bedrooms, and two-bedroom apartments in the city have all gotten smaller over the last decade. One-bedrooms -- which make up 60% of new apartments -- saw average size drop by 55 square feet.

"Three-bedrooms were the only layout to gain space, adding 91 square feet, but they remain a niche offering, representing just 2% of new construction," the report stated.
