This Week's Find: A Bachelor Pad in a Classroom
Living Area
Schools and bachelor pads are not usually uttered in the same sentence, but we are changing all that with This Week’s Find.
2428 17th Street NW was formerly an Adams Morgan schoolhouse, built in the early 1890s, but like other commercial and public buildings around the city, it was converted to a condo project in the early 1990s called Morgan Annex. This 1,250 square-foot unit was formerly one of the school’s largest classrooms.
Dining Area
The current owner, who has been living there for 17 years, made a few cool additions to the wide open space, including building bookshelves to carve out a bedroom area. While the 8-foot shelves don’t reach all the way up to the ceiling, the bedroom area and bathroom feel private and separated from the main living space. The new owner would have a lot of freedom to further divide up the space.
The unit is truly lofty, with 15-foot ceilings and giant windows that make the furniture look tiny. A 5-by-6-by-12-foot attic, accessible from the kitchen, a coat closet in the entry, and a closet in the bedroom offer some storage. The owner upgraded the kitchen and bathroom and installed new hardwood floors during his time at the condo.
