6627 81st Street
This Week’s Find is a curved house located a few blocks from the C&O Canal in Cabin John that has perhaps the most unique exterior one will see in the DC area. Designed by architect John D. Wilner in 1993, the curvilinear three-story estate went under contract over the weekend shortly after hitting the market.
Foyer
The home’s almost-futuristic façade is a 77-foot curved wall that echoes the curve of the cul-de-sac where the home is located, while the rear of the house is a 67-foot straight line. The house varies in width from 28 feet at the garage to 21 feet at the kitchen, and there are no 90-degree angles at the meeting of two walls.
Kitchen
The home’s interior revolves around an elliptic staircase, which is just inside the front door. The living room and the kitchen, with its access to a rear deck, are both offshoots of the foyer, while a family room is a few steps down from the dining area.
Behind the staircase, a two-story, 256 square-foot glass block accent wall brings natural light into both the main and second levels. On the second floor, the master bedroom has a wall of windows and sliding-glass doors that open onto a long balcony. An additional two bedrooms and a study with built-in storage are also on this floor.
Basement
The basement has a customized media room, wine storage under the stairs, built-in shelving with a rolling ladder, full bedroom and bathroom and a separate exit into the backyard. A two-car garage with workshop is also at the rear.
