A new analysis reveals that three DC neighborhoods are outpacing the rest of the city when it comes to solar installations.
DC-based data analytics company Silectis found that Capitol Hill leads the city when it comes to embracing solar power. The Hill is not only the neighborhood with the most solar permits issued in 2019, but the number of permits have more than doubled there each year for the past three years.
Takoma and Petworth are second and third on the list, but have only half the number of permits of Capitol Hill. There is surprisingly little concentration of solar installation activity in the neighborhoods of Shaw, Logan Circle, Dupont Circle, and southern Columbia Heights. The map above (with more data on the Silectis site) shows solar installations around the city.

The map and analysis were created using the data lake tool Magpie, which collected and analyzed data from DC’s open data portal. The city posts building permit information on the portal; included in the applications are permits for solar panels at commercial and residential locations. Silectis can also see if a permit has been approved or completed, and can also pull out kWh and number of panels by parsing the permit summary.
