Events DC announced this weekend that the demolition of RFK Stadium will begin later this month.
"Beginning Monday, January 13, 2025, you will notice an increase in activity in and around the RFK campus and stadium," Events DC announced in a post on Saturday. "This activity is due to Events DC’s contractors remobilizing in preparation for the initial phases of the structural demolition of RFK Stadium."
The National Park Service has given the green light for the stadium to be demolished, and Events DC said that all hazardous materials have been removed from the stadium in order for this to happen.
For decades, RFK served as home to the city's NFL franchise, the DC United soccer team and two baseball teams, but it has been vacant for the last several years. Last week, President Biden signed a bill into law that transfers the land that includes the stadium from the federal government to city control, potentially paving the way for construction of a new stadium for the Washington Commanders.
