The project will ultimately consist of three buildings -- the original historic building, a fitness center, and a gymnasium – connected by an atrium. The historic building will house classrooms, lounges, a computer room, a demonstration kitchen, and multipurpose rooms. The new additions will include the gymnasium, fitness rooms, yoga rooms, and dance studios.
The Crummell School, named for Black minister Alexander Crummell, has been vacant for almost 50 years. Ivy City residents have been asking the city to transform the building into a recreation and community space for neighborhood youth for decades. In 2021, Mayor Bowser approved funding to remake the property.
