Mountain Shelters Get Sleek

In this week’s departure from all things DC real estate related, we find solace in the mountains.
A few days ago, the website Gear Patrol wrote about a cool new shelter option for climbers. LEAP, the Living Ecological Alpine Pod, is a futuristic, green, spaceship-like base camp option made for those that like to scale rocks. The tubular structures, which are built off-site and dropped in place by helicopters, are built from the type of materials used to make airplanes and sea-faring ships.
The pods offer living areas, bunk beds, kitchens with an electric induction cooker, and a toilet that somehow disposes of waste without damaging surroundings. Solar power supplies the pod with its minimal energy needs, and a thermally isolated inner door keeps things relatively warm.
The Italian company that builds the LEAP doesn’t provide exact pricing information, but we’re guessing that it costs a bit more than your average hut.
