High Demand: More Marijuana Grow Closets Slated For DC Condos
The grow closet in the Kenyon Street condo.
The Initiative 71-friendly amenity that local developer Eric Hirshfield incorporated into his recently-completed condo project in DC’s Parkview neighborhood was such a hit that it will become a staple in his new projects, and has buyers and builders alike clamoring to learn more.
The reaction was strong and widespread when UrbanTurf broke the news that Hirshfield had built marijuana grow closets in two side-by-side condos on the 500 block of Kenyon Street NW. (Earlier this year, the city passed a law legalizing many aspects of marijuana, including the ability to grow up to six marijuana plants in a home.) The level of interest in the new feature exceeded his expectations.

“After the article, I received queries from a number of developers asking how to design, install and market the grow closet concept,” Hirshfield told UrbanTurf. “Prospective buyers have also reached out to ask about future projects or how to retrofit their own homes.”
Hirshfield is moving full-steam ahead with the concept. He is currently working on a courtyard condo project near Irving Street and Georgia Avenue NW where all the units will be designed with grow closets. He is also talking with a person that designs “fully automated grow appliances” that are the size of a small refrigerator that can be recessed into the wall.
“Due to the buzz and high demand, I will be installing this amenity in all my condos developments from here on,” Hirshfield said.
