The development pipeline along Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue continues to grow.
Masjid Muhammad is applying for a map amendment for the 2300 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue SE between Chicago and Talbert Streets (map). The organization owns roughly 22,750 square feet of the 46,859 square-foot block, where the Clara Muhammad School was previously located.

The application is seeking to upzone the block to support mixed-use development with a maximum height of 65 feet without inclusionary zoning. If approved, the developer is interested in building an all-affordable mixed-use project with 85 units above 13,000 square feet of retail. The apartments would be affordable to households earning between 30 and 80 percent of area median income.
Masjid Muhammad also has plans in the works to expand their mosque at 1519 4th Street NW (map). The ANC 5E voted to support the organization's plans to seek zoning relief for the expansion last week.
