In 2018, DC Population Grew at Slowest Pace in a Decade
While DC's population exceeded 700,000 for the first time in decades last year, that's only half the story.
The Office of the Chief Financial Officer released its latest monthly review of economic and revenue trends on Wednesday, a report that, among other things, looks under the hood of DC's population growth. In 2018, the population grew by one percent compared to 2017. Unlike previous years, the 6,764 residents that DC gained in 2018 were primarily due to the birthrate rather than migration. For context, the population grew by an average of 12,222 people annually from 2008 to 2018.
Despite the paltry growth last year, 2018 was still the 13th consecutive year of population growth. From 2005 to 2018, the population grew by 135,319, a gain of 23.9 percent.
