Green Hat: Former Residence of Capitol Hill Bootlegger To Hit the Market
The home that once belonged to Green Hat Gin’s namesake, George Cassiday, will hit the market this weekend for $539,000, Coldwell Banker’s Jeanne Harrison tells UrbanTurf. The two-bed, 2.5-bath rowhouse at 303 17th Street SE (map) is located in Hill East a couple of blocks from Stadium Armory Metro.
Cassiday was one of the chief suppliers of gin to Congress during Prohibition, known as the Man in the Green Hat for the felt cap he wore. At a congressman’s urging, he eventually set up shop in the House, and later moved to the Senate after being discovered. He found the senators more discreet than the House members, according to a Washington Post column on Cassiday’s legacy. One senator asked for “more reading matter” and referred to Cassiday as his “librarian.”
In 1930, Cassiday confessed what he’d done to call attention to the hypocrisy of lawmakers’ drinking while imposing Prohibition. So, if you’re an avid gin-drinker or a lover of Congressional hypocrisy, this may be the house for you.
