DC ranked the second best U.S city for young adults in a recent study by Portfolio magazine. The city was edged out by Austin, Texas.
Popular as they are among national financial magazines, lists like these are anything but scientific. Still, it can be irresistible to link to them when your city ranks well.
For this list, Portfolio research included a ten-part study that took into account per capita income, median rent, and the share of residents between 18 and 34 years old. The study covered 67 metropolitan areas that had at least 750,000 residents as of mid-2008. They ranged from New York City, with a population of 19 million, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at 774,000.
According to Portfolio, “educated young adults flock to the nation’s capital.” Some of the deciding factors for DC’s high ranking included the fact that 35.8 percent of all 18-to-34-year-olds in the city hold bachelor’s degrees, and that the per capita income for this group ($56,510) is well above the national average.
