DC is 8th Most Popular Destination for People Relocating
Relocation.com recently published a list of the top ten cities to which Americans are relocating. The site, which helps pair moving companies with people looking to move, analyzed roughly half a million moving requests to generate the list, on which DC ranked eighth.
“The data are a microcosm of overall activity in the country, but still a good gauge of where people are moving because of job relocations and lifestyle changes,” Relocation.com CEO Bill Sheehan said in the announcement.
The top ten are as follows:- Las Vegas
- Denver
- Charlotte, NC
- Phoenix/Mesa
- Portland, OR
- Seattle
- Orlando
- Washington, DC
- Atlanta
- Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg
The list shows a trend in people moving south or west, with the exception of California, which saw more people moving out of the state than into it. The Carolinas did particularly well: North Carolina saw 80 percent more requests for people moving in than out, while South Carolina saw 70 percent more requests.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, there appears to be an exodus out of many of the Great Lakes states. For every 100 people moving into Michigan, 210 were looking to move out. Ohio had similar statistics.
While these trends are interesting in their own right, they also carry political consequences:
“These types of shifts have wide ramifications for the economy as well as political representation. The federal government has recently announced that the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida would each pick up a seat in the House of Representatives. Minnesota, which saw a big jump in population outflow in the Relocation.com data in 2008, could lose a seat, the government said.”
