A rendering of how the Amazon campus could sit in NoMA
DC is one of the frontrunners for the second Amazon headquarters, according to new analysis by The Wall Street Journal.
Amazon is aiming to construct a full-size campus comparable to the existing one in Seattle, occupying up to 8 million square feet, somewhere in the United States and virtually every major metro area is vying for the new headquarters. The Wall Street Journal’s analysis included interviews with people familiar with Amazon’s thinking and how they go about selecting new sites, and they also ranked cities based on the attributes that the company highlighted in its request for proposals, including fiscal health, the cost of living and the technology labor force.

“Dallas, Boston and Washington, D.C. have the strongest characteristics for a second headquarters,” the paper concluded. DC got high marks in the categories of fiscal health, tech labor force and culture fit while, not surprisingly, low marks when it came to cost of living.
In October, the District unveiled the four sites in the city that it is putting forth for consideration: the Anacostia Riverfront, the NoMA/Union Station/Union Market area, Hill East and Shaw/Howard University. Amazon is expected to make a choice early next year.
