Car2Go to Cease Operations in North America

A car2go.

Say goodbye to all the little car2go vehicles on DC streets.

SHARE NOW, the parent company of car2go, announced on Wednesday that the company was ceasing its North America operations as of February 29, 2020.

"This decision was based on two extremely complicated realities," a SHARE NOW press release read. "The first being the volatile state of the global mobility landscape, and the second being the rising infrastructure complexities facing North American transportation today and the associated costs needed to sustain operations here."

car2go launched in DC in 2011 and the blue and white, two-seater smart cars could be seen all around town starting in 2012. Users pay a one-time fee and then can access cars around the city via a mobile app. Drivers are charged by the minute, and car2go covers gas and insurance. Unlike other car-sharing services, car2gos offered point-to-point service which was convenient for drivers making a one-way trip.

The initial car2go fleet of was approximately 300 vehicles, but now there are more than 150,000 users in DC, so the loss will certainly be felt in the area.
