Best New Listings: A Meat Locker, a Craftsman and a Sunroom
In this week’s edition of Best New Listings, we look at a Capitol Hill row house with an antique meat locker, a Takoma Park Craftsman with an extra-deep backyard, and a Cleveland Park co-op with a sunroom.
Capitol Hill Row House with an Antique Meat Locker
A hundred years ago, the first floor of this three-bedroom home was Johnston’s Market (Johnston and his nine children lived upstairs). The downstairs still has some vestiges of its former life, like a meat locker in the living room and a wall of windows all along the north side. In the 70’s, a total renovation turned the meat locker into a wet bar (while keeping the meat hooks and old compressor) and added a skylight for even more brightness. The renovators also rebuilt the fireplaces and arches with original brick. The floors look charmingly original as well. The house is located close to both Stanton Park and Lincoln Park

Takoma Park Craftsman with Reading Nooks
At some point, every space in this three-bedroom Craftsman was finished, and now the home truly lives on all four floors. The uppermost level is open to the stairs, with a window seat and a cushy nook, and the basement is currently being used as a playroom. The layout of the house is in a traditional four square style, but many renovations were modern and the house has a sleek, glassy kitchen. The backyard is very deep, with room for a playhouse structure and a swing. There is also a wide front porch and two separate back porches.

Cleveland Park Co-op With a Sunroom
This 750-square foot unit is in one of DC’s first co-op buildings, The Porter, which was built in 1925 by Morris Cafritz. It’s fairly spacious for a one bedroom, with an eat-in kitchen, entry hallway, large bedroom and living room and a separate sunroom that is currently being used as an office. The 28-unit building has a common green space where residents are free to garden. The fee — $479 per month — is not too bad for a co-op, and this building has no underlying mortgage and gives owners the freedom to rent, relatively rare qualities. (More info on co-ops here.)
