An Architect-Renovated Goodman Home

A one-level, three-bedroom listing designed by Charles M. Goodman has come to market in Silver Spring’s Hammond Wood, an enclave of 58 Goodman-designed homes developed between 1949 and 1951. Three architects who met studying at SCI-Arc in California bought the house in 2005 and won a Montgomery County preservation award for a renovation completed in 2006. They installed new electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems, double-pane glass and Brazilian cherry floors, while keeping Goodman’s original layout, the green-stained wood pass-through between the kitchen and dining room, the sliding closet doors and the fireplace hearth. The renovated kitchen has custom shelving, wood cabinets, a Heath Ceramics tile backsplash and white Formica counters that match the design of Goodman’s office presentation table. Outside, they added a flagstone patio with built-in seating and a fire pit, and a new roof was just installed.
