Concealed Cabinetry in Kalorama Condo
This 1,650 square-foot Kalorama condo is concealed behind the façade of a Federal rowhouse typical of the neighborhood. The unit entrance lies off a hall that provides access to a shared brick patio, opening into the bright living area. To the left, the minimalist kitchen has large-paneled Italian cabinetry, a concealed refrigerator, six-eye cooktop and integrated espresso machine. A dining area separates the kitchen from the living room, where oversized sliding glass doors open onto a terrace with a winding metal stair up to a balcony outside the master bedroom. Both the master and second bedroom are up the set of stairs with glass partition, each with en-suite baths.

The living room and formal dining room have beamed ceilings, with the latter also boasting a stained-glass window and built-in buffet/china cabinet. The bright, white kitchen has a breakfast section and French doors leading to the side-yard slate patio path, which continues along the side of the house to a broader yard area. Upstairs, the third bedroom has a wall of built-ins surrounding a media cubby and console combination. The house also has a finished basement with a rec room and bonus room.

A Formerly-Featured Robert Gurney Design
Long-time UT readers may remember this Robert Gurney-designed house just on the other side of Western Avenue in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The house is as practical inside as it as interesting outside. Renovated in 2007, the exterior of the house is a modernized take on the mid-century home typical of the neighborhood, with multi-story expanses of windows and glass transoms that make the roof appear to be floating on the rear façade. The interior has features and finishes associated with Gurney, like floor-to-ceiling doors and wide entryways and a custom column living room fireplace between two sets of floor-to-ceiling cabinets. But perhaps the most unique feature of the house is its 23 closets.
