Are Plans For The Redevelopment of GEICO's Headquarters Inching Forward?

Back in February, it was announced that GEICO would move its headquarters from a sprawling campus in Friendship Heights just outside DC to a building in downtown Bethesda. With that move cemented, plans to redevelop a portion of the headquarters site may be inching forward.
An application recently filed with Montgomery County seeks to extend the validity of a plan to redevelop a portion of the 26-acre site bounded by Western Avenue, Willard Avenue and Friendship Boulevard (map) with 200 townhomes and 300 apartments. Approval was initially given for this redevelopment plan way back in 1998.
"GEICO needs to amend both the Preliminary Plan and the APF validity periods to provide sufficient time to obtain Site Plan approval and proceed with redevelopment," the application stated. "It also seeks to amend the transportation conditions to satisfy current Infrastructure Policy and Local Area Transportation Review requirements."
The company is not looking to extend the approval to build an additional 800,000 ft.² of commercial space at the site. Instead, a separate development application will eventually be filed for that portion of the property.
GEICO plans to move into its new home at The Wilson at 7272 Wisconsin Avenue early next year. For a look at the projects in the works around Friendship Heights, click here.
