A corner building whose future was once deemed questionable may soon get a new life as a corporate residential development.
Preservation DC has a proposal to retrofit the building at 1100 6th Street NW (map) into a 75-unit corporate housing development with ground-floor retail. DC's Historic Preservation Office (HPO) is recommending that the city's historic review board approve the design of the project.

"The HPO recommends that the Review Board find the concept of a four-story addition on 6th Street and a seven-story addition on L Street to be compatible with the character of the historic district and consistent with the purpose of the preservation act, and delegate final approval to staff."

The new building will be 70 feet tall plus penthouse and will also include a four-story trio of townhouse-style units with bays and ground-floor entry along 6th Street. Designed by Bonstra|Haresign, it would have furnished units available to those in town on business for extended stays.
The project will go before the review board at the end of the month.
